When we're young we are taught about heroes, the people that make life interesting and give you the will to follow your goals. But what truly is a hero? Is a hero the man that you watch on tv hitting a home-run, or that person that lives their life making things better for everyone but themselves? In many eyes those are the true heroes, but have we no room in our hearts for the men and women of today who push that extra mile to overcome the stereotypes of older generations? To me, those are the people worth remembering, the people worth celebrating.
In every young heart there is a spot for the person that you hear about in history books, or the person on television making some kind of difference. Most common is the sports hero, you hear about this person everywhere, but you only hear about what they've done on television, not what they do when the world is looking elsewhere. Yet, every little boy has that one star they look up to, the man they want to be like when they grow up.
But what about our saviors, our protectors? Everyone loves the man who resembles a super hero---a police officer, or a war veteran. These are the men that take on the job of protecting the citizens, no matter the support they are given. A true protector will strive to do his job, rather than thinking of how he will be remembered, because most likely he won't be known in his life time anyway. But how soon is it before the generations of today are to forget these men, these diamonds cutting the glass of everyday problems?
Are those the real heroes? Or is a hero that one being in every person's life that pushes toward some outworldly goal? A hero is not just someone you hear about in your daily life, they aren't just some celebrity gracing the covers of magazines and newspapers. A hero is someone that any person can look up to, someone worth remembering. Look at the child that exceeds past family expectations, or maybe the single parent working every day to make things better for their children. These are the people that are truly worth remembering, because to be a hero to one person would be like being a hero to the world.
So when you are given the question of who your hero is, what will your answer be? Will you always remember that man you viewed on television as a child? Or maybe you'll choose to remember a highly awarded police officer in your town, or some soldier returning from Iraq. But how soon are you to forget the person who makes life easier to understand? That one special person in your life who's done nothing but their absolute best, showing you that life is worth living, and dreams are worth striving for.
